

The scope and influence of his public talks and lectures during the 1970’s and early 1980’s, as well as the fiction and non-fiction he published during that decade-namely, If Beale Street Could Talk, resonate with current educators, activists, and artists of all stripes.

Khadijah Queen is the author of six books of poetry, most recently Anodyne (Tin House 2020), winner of the William Carlos Williams Award from the Poetry Society of America. A Kundiman fellow, Soham is also an assistant editor at Fence and The Georgia Review. Her chapbooks include and nevermind the storm (Portable Press Yo-Yo Labs 2013) and in airplane and other poems (oxeye 2018). Soham Patel is the author of the poetry collections to afar from afar (The Accomplices 2018) and ever really hear it (Subito Press, 2018). She is an assistant professor at Bryn Mawr College where she directs the poetry program. Matthews received a 2020 Pew Fellowship and a 2016 Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Award. Matthews’ first collection of poems is the critically acclaimed Simulacra, which received the prestigious 2016 Yale Series of Younger Poets Award. Her memoir, Bring Down the Little Birds (University of Arizona 2010) was a finalist for the American Book Award.
